BOARD MEMBER POSITIONS OPEN

Milwaukee Business Improvement District (BID) #16 Uptown Crossing is looking to fill two unpaid board memberships for 2025. These are volunteer positions without compensation. One position is for the BID 16 and the other is for the Uptown Crossing Economic Development Corporation, a 501c3 launched by BID 16 in 2023.

The responsibilities are similar but have one major difference: BID 16 board members must own a commercial property or own or run a business within the BID 16 Uptown Crossing corridor, which runs along W. North Avenue, between N 60th Street and Sherman Blvd and along W. Lisbon Avenue, between N. 46th and N. 51st streets.

Uptown Crossing EDC board members do not need to own a business or property in BID 16 but need to show an interest in the economic health of the commercial corridor.

Time commitment

Attend a 1- to 1½-hour meeting per month via Zoom. Serve on one committee per year. Committees will form as needed to realize our Strategic Plan to transform Uptown Crossing into a lively, walkable hub where culture and commerce intersect. We cultivate a welcoming and vibrant urban corridor that supports diverse, locally owned businesses and attracts a varied clientele. With a focus on family- friendly amenities, beautification, and a unique mix of food, retail, and entertainment, we aim to create a place where everyone feels connected and inspired.

Board members will coordinate with BID 16’s Executive Director to fulfil the following responsibilities:

Governance and Oversight

- Implement and oversee the BID's operating plan

- Ensure adherence to the BID's mission and protect its interests

- Make decisions as a group; no individual director can control the BID or make decisions on its behalf

- Annually review and potentially modify the operating plan, submitting changes for local legislative body approval

Financial Management

- Oversee the BID's finances and ensure responsible use of resources

- Review and approve budgets, major expenditures, and financial reports

- Ensure preparation of annual reports describing the BID's status, including expenditures and revenues

Strategic Planning

- Participate in establishing strategic goals, objectives, and policies for the BID

- Ensure that the BID's objectives are being met and policies are being carried out

- Contribute to the development and implementation of the BID's operating plan

Board Composition and Structure

- Serve staggered terms as designated by the local legislative body

- Maintain a board with at least 5 members, with a majority owning or occupying real property in the BID

- Participate in electing or appointing officers and staff of the BID

Community Representation

- Act as representatives of the BID's constituents

- Engage with the community and promote the BID's initiatives

- Serve as ambassadors for the BID and potentially represent it publicly

Legal and Ethical Responsibilities

- Act in good faith and use informed judgment in decision-making

- Avoid conflicts of interest and act for the benefit of the BID, not personal gain

- Understand and uphold the BID's governing documents and applicable laws

By fulfilling these responsibilities, BID board members play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the appeal of the district, promoting orderly development, and ensuring effective management of the BID's resources and initiatives.
